The Madisons at Black Bear Lodge.

As Bart and I were too poor for Splendour, and even too poor for Too Poor for Splendour, we saw The Madisons play (for free!) at Black Bear Lodge in Brisbane. Sigh, was really good.

Nikko @ The Time Machine. July 7th 2012.

Nikko were the first to play in the late afternoon and put on a powerful, dark and brooding performance of gloomy post-rock with a western twang. Their rhythm section is so ridiculously tight which gives the two guitarists freedom to create the soundtrack for some kind of horror-western. Definitely a band to watch out for. Click on the pics for a larger view.

-
Nikko was founded in Brisbane in 2005 by schoolyard friends Ryan Potter (vocals, guitar & lyrics), Jackson Briggs (guitar), Sam Whiting (bass) and Blair Westbrook (drums).

Nikko’s debut album, The Warm Side (2010, Tenzenmen/FUSE) is a collection of nine songs written between 2007 and 2009. The Warm Side has received much critical acclaim since its 2010 release. Brisbane's RAVE magazine gave the album 4 and 1/2 stars, saying that "For a debut album, it is pretty much as close to perfect as you can get”. The Warm Side also received highly positive reviews in Time Off, Scene and Mess+Noise, and single 'Wedding Song' was named RAVE’s Single of the Week. Following the largely underground success of The Warm Side and subsequent Australian tours, the band released a live recording entitled Live at The Tote in December 2010. The release received 4 and 1/2 stars in Time Off; reviewer Scott Thompson described it as demonstrating “One of the most accomplished bands in the genre at the height of their power”.

Nikko’s latest release, a double A-side single entitled About the Spirit/Smoke Alarms, features two new tracks taken from the band’s upcoming sophomore album, Gold & Red. These two tracks demonstrate a stylistic change in direction that showcases Ryan Potter’s skills as a songwriter and lyricist, along with the band’s collective ability to craft these skills into distinctive, compelling arrangements. About the Spirit/Smoke Alarms received Single of the Week in Time Off upon its release and is currently available as a limited edition 7” vinyl from nikko.bandcamp.com/

The band are currently gearing up for the release of their second full-length album, Gold & Red, due for release on the 3rd of July through Tenzenmen and nikko.bandcamp.com, and will support the album’s release with a national tour in September.

Melk @ The Time Machine. July 7th 2012

Melk.
Fun as hell garage rock played by ridiculously nice people.

Melk is a creation that was dreamed up by Nicholas England and Siena Hart (ex-members of Brisbane Post-punk band 'The Submariners') while in a cafe in Amsterdam in November 2011; the word literally being Dutch for milk. The idea behind this project would be to strip back down to bare bones and re-affirm what rock n' roll was about. Shortly after arriving back in Brisbane they began collaborating and rehearsing with hardcore drummer - Conner O'Brien and punk guitarist, Sebastian Hew (Canibal) to create a sound that would be distinctly and unequivocally: Melk.

Canibal.
3 come out of the darkness when the night seemed over, picked up their instruments and started playing loud, fast, greasy punk that made me want to start fighting Daniel. Was great.

Fresh Prints of Bel Air.

We've set up a new print/magazine room downstairs. Heaps of old advertisements and unusual prints. Life/Womans Weekly/Woman's day magazines from the 1930s-1980s. They make great gifts or birthday presents, perfect for collage/scrapbooking material and amazing for photocopying and drawing over for zines. Still have Rolling Stone, Q, MAD and other magazines upstairs.
